My manual explicitly disagrees with #5.

If I had a flat tire or body damage , I think I’d notice it while walking towards the vehicle. That counts for #3, right?

you (wouldn’t) be surprised how many people don’t seem to notice...

As a former Army driver, you might get this shit back not upside down and on fire.

Also, #17... if I end up with my pants off so be it. I can’t control that.

I possibly missed a flat this winter. Despite having no leaks (the tire has held pressure perfectly since it was reinflated), I had a completely flat tire at the end of a trip. I suppose its possible I somehow hit something hard enough to break the seal on the bead, but it seems more likely it deflated while I was gone for winter break, and I just missed it before leaving (despite walking past it). Of course I also didn’t notice it driving, even at highway speed, which may be a bad sign for my powers of observation.

What is a 1st  echelon check?

Most modern advice seems to be that using the engine early (though not immediately slamming it to the rev limiter) is the best way to get it up to temp quickly , and minimize the amount of time it runs with sub-optimal lubrication. Oils have gotten a lot better though, so just because warming up the engine may be unnecessary (or even harmful) today, doesn’t mean that it was bad policy back then.

It goes by a different name now, but in the Technical Manual for all Army equipment, there is a Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) “guide” for things to check at different time intervals. Before, during and after using, weekly, monthly, quarterly, bi-annual, and yearly.

For most vehicles, the 1st echelon (again the terminology has changed) I am guessing would be a quick walk around for any obvious breakage, look under neither for leaks, make sure anything your hauling is still strapped down properly. Just check things you would do when getting gas on a long road trip, except the Army lays it Barney style.

I was thinking of “echelon” as it would pertain to a formation. So it sounds sort of like various levels of inspection, as with aircraft. First level is basic inspection , ultimate level would be to tear the truck down and rebuilt it. My brother drove a fuel truck in the Army back in the 80s. I imagine he would know.

Thanks.

Ya, he might have a better idea just based off time.

T he formation level stuff is possible too , nowadays there is what is called 1 0, 20, and 30 level maintenance. 10 level is vehicle operator level, basically what you can do with the tools the vehicle is fitted with

20 being unit level mechanics, as in most units have their own mechanics that can do most maintenance but aren’t really going to be pulling engines and stuff just based off the cost of outfitting every unit in the Army with lifts and other expensive tools.

30 level would be a dedicated maintenance company or platoon within a brigade or battalion based on how much equipment they have. Or possibly a base level place, when I was at Fort Lewis there was a 30 level shop for most of post, it was a giant (probably 3 football fields size w arehouse) that was mostly run by civilians.

I keyed in on the “ halts.”Which I would think would be quicker  than a “stop.” Which had me thinking a quick walk around type of deal. It is possible that back in the day the operators were responsible for a lot less than now and could do all their checks quickly on a halt.

I see you’re an author on Overland too - D you want to post there about our life raft of the forum? They’re very much welcome there with us. There’s a lot of crossover with us too .

If they’re happy with DT that’s fine too.  Just want to include everyone that wants to join us.

I remember shocking a friend's tire pressure and it being at like 12 psi. No tire was within 5 psi of another.

A good driver is double-clutching, not granny-shifting. Because once we get this back to the motor pool, soldier, we’re gonna have to replace the piston rings you fried.
